The wire size should be taken off the chart based on distance and load. I agree that getting your voltage up using series/ parallel makes sense in the context of an MPPT controller, which needs a lot of headroom to function optimally. Also, the amps will be lower and this reduce wire size requirements. Some will say parallel is better, because of…[Read more]

perhaps you might want to carry some blocks, etc., to get more level. I had the depot guy cut me 12″ pieces off a 2 x 12 + I carry some 6′ pieces to put under both axles if needed. if you’re out of level bad enough to feel the need to pull the emergency switch, you may be out of level enough to damage your refrigerator, which needs to remain…[Read more]

Cap, extrapolating Ray’s out put onto yours, you should be looking at around 16 amps on your controller. You mention shade. Dude, ANY shade kills your output. Are you saying your in some shade. Even a golf ball size shade spot is very bad. Can you move into full sun, then see the result?

Might make sense to figure out when and for how long to run your generator so you don’t damage your batteries by drawing them down more than half their capacity. As Ray says, a meter would help. If you can’t swing a meter financially at this time, then google whatever you need to understand how to use a cheap voltage meter and your battery man…[Read more]

Just curious, what did the dealer want to install it?

Hi CaptnRob,
I’m looking to put some solar on my rig and wouldn’t try to install the stuff myself, but you seem to have experience. I wouldn’t rely on anything from a forum on a life safety issue like this. One good source is Jack Mayer’s web site, where he details the electrical options on the inverter and how same would funtion with transfer…[Read more]

LOL…Yes, just saw a video on the hyderization process! That will be both a lay (or fall) down and lay over for sure. That’s the tallest shot I’ve seen since my 20s!

Thanks Lauren.
Route is not certain. Several folks here have posted their routes. http://www.rvnetwork.com/index.php?showtopic=121259
Most agree with you that the Cassie is a little harsh. I think I’ll take a more easterly approach.
Good info on the shopping. But if the world keeps using the US as a cash safe haven, I guess the exchange will be…[Read more]
@rvwanderlust Hi guys. I’ve been reading you all’s blog. Good stuff! I’m looking in to solar now, so I appreciated your info on boondocking. Gotta start somewhere. I’ve never boondocked, but it appears in surfing the blogs, etc., that this is the way to go. Sounds like fun.

Hi all. BIG Alaska trek starting this year.
Heading up from Seattle early May 2016 or sooner depending on weather and wandering back down around October 2017. Most likely traveling solo this trip, but my navigator’s seat may fill by opportunity. Not much planning done, but I’m staying in Seward over winter in a furnished rental…[Read more]

@lolaandrush Hi Lola and Rush. Just watched the 3 videos showing Eddie’s solar install. Great system. Eddie sure knows his stuff. I’m in the conceptual phase of planning my own system now. After I think about it some more, maybe I can pick your brain. I’m thinking about 400 watts on the roof with expandability.

Not sure if you are a DIY kind of guy John. But if not, I know of a fantastic RV Solar guy trained by AM Solar who is top notch. (I don’t get a commission or kickback haha) but if you are in need of thoughts I can try and connect y’all. He is a full time RVer and does mobile installs too.
Hi there. I’ve been talking to a fellow named Eddie who I sourced through Ray’s YouTube channel. AM Solar is top notch. I priced a premium system (including lithium batts) with them and it was like $14K, with a 40% labor component; ouch! Honestly, that’s good for them. This federal solar tax benefit is certainly stimulating demand! I’ve poured…[Read more]
Eddie did my system and I can’t be any happier!
You should check out their website http://bit.ly/1Qw6fm4 and see how meticulously he works.
Hi Kimberly, Thanks for the referral. I’ve talked to Eddie about doing my system. I’m pricing up the components now and will be out to see Eddie in AZ in about 30 days.
Eddie did our system and it was a whole lot cheaper than am solar wanted to do it for and I got 400 watts more than they were going to put in service. I’m sure glad I found Eddie cause am was about to burn me a new one. And if I’d went with them I’d be going back and upgrading. Mobile Homestead Solar was a blessing to us.
Here you go John: http://www.rvsolarsolutions.com/ Talk with Greg and let him know that Eric and Brittany sent you his way. (We don’t get a kickback or anything if you decide to use him) He’s just a really nice guy and we enjoyed our time by the campfire with him and his wife.
