I know that the anode catches all the corrosive material in you hot water heater. If I put in a Hott rod heater, wont that cause the tank to corrode without an anode?
Welcome Keith!
I would wonder about that too. hmmm..
It may be a moot point though as most fifth wheels will likely come with a dual electric/gas HW heater.
I would not be too concerned with the build up on the element. Most RV’s are a 6 gallon tank (from what I’ve read) so the flow- through should minimize the calcium deposits. If you are concerned then flush the tank as you would an electric hot water tank at home – once a year. When I checked out the Hott Rod web site I noticed a tank-less system. Anyone looked into those?
It seems to be replacing the anode from what I gather, which is what protects the tank from corroding away on my Suburban HW heater.
We travel down in the desert and you get a ton of hard well water, I’ve had to remove my heater element a couple times and strip off calcium deposits. I can tell when it needs it as I can hear it sing as the water is heating. Guess it depends where you RV, up north on Vancouver Island the water is soft rain water and never have problems when there.
So would it be a good idea to carry a spare element? Anything on the RV market for water softeners?
I carry one, they are pretty cheap and available at most hardware stores. They also need a special thin walled socket to remove.
