RVing with Special Needs

Went to Reno yesterday and saw how this guy solved the wheel chair to the RV problem.  Was wondering how he got all that into his trailer until I walked around front and saw his diamond plate trailer for hauling it.  (Later I saw his Pick Up which was all diamond plate from the cab back.)

My wife has Rheumatoid Arthritis and found getting into our Cougar 297RKS painful and awkward. So I made some changes. First I replaced the 3 step, stairs with a 4 step version that has mostly 7 inch steps rather than 9 inch!! They are the “Elkhart Tool and Die Quadra Step”. Very easy to install, and the owners were very helpful with my…

It’s a great solution. Being a safety nut, I recommend keeping an eye on the step’s rivets. I don’t know if it’s the same manufacturer (Elkhart Indiana is where many rv companies are based), but our rig came with a 4-step unit. We received a recall notice from Keystone to fix defective rivets that eventually break. All they did is drill them…[Read more]

“David Sherrer doesn’t let the fact that he’s in a wheelchair stop him from enjoying RV travel. Now he’s dedicating the next few years of his life to show others with disabilities that they too can hit the road on a cross-country adventure.”

I posted this in the newbie section and then found this group so I am reposting it here hoping for suggestions.

I would consider myself a pre-newbie as we have not yet made the move to purchase an RV. We are into the action part of our plan and hope to be in our RV as fultimers by the end of the year. By action part of our plan I mean that…[Read more]

This would be ideal for campground RVing. Easily fits in our rig and saves me doing the pushing. The $2000 price tag is a bit beyond me as I have something else in mind.

What a great item. Would maybe insurance cover some of it??

Depends on your insurance and doctor I suppose. Medicare pays for my wife’s wheelchair. I will have to ask the firefly guys about that part.

I sent them an email but they haven’t got back to me.

They just go back to me. It appears that if you would qualify for a mobil wheel chair (like a Hoverround), that is if you can’t use your hands/arms to push the wheels of a regular wheel chair you would qualify for Medicare/Insurance support. See the link:

We’re going to give it a try.

If you have already downloaded my free eBook “Roughing it Smoothly” (raywhyte.ca) you will have read the attached story. I just wanted to share a very special time in my camping experience and a shout out of encouragement to all of those dealing with their disability. We have lost contact with Wayne and Kaye and would dearly like to see them…
