Howdy Campers! I have a 2002 Chevy 2500HD 4×4 tow vehicle, and for the last 2500-3000 miles we have had trouble keeping the front end aligned also we have had a popping sound coming from the front left wheel when we turn to the left hard. After many times to the tire shop and nothing found I had to tear in to it to find out what was going on. I knew the tie rod ends & links, ball joints, and a heavy duty idler had been replaced a little over a year ago so all was good there. Come to find out the holes to where the lower suspension control arm is connected to the frame were “Egged Out”. The hangers are made of 1/8″ steel and after time it gets broke out.
I took some grade-8 washers the same size as the bolts and welded them into place to keep the washers from moving. The welds are good, but welding on your back in a tight spot makes it hard to put a pretty one on. I also put antiseize on the bolts to keep them from locking up and working a new wobbled out hole.
This is for sure a weak link on the Chevy 2500HD/3500 trucks front end, and if you haul trailers like I do you’re putting more stress on them than the guys driving them in town. I would urge you to look at the front suspension bolt holes on the frame for any “Egging-Out”.
Happy Trails!!!

June 29, 2015 at 9:26 am #11825Yep Rush, 4×4 is a good thing for off road and if you need to you can use the low range for going up super steep gravel roads. I still miss my 1-1/4 ton 1990 Ford super duty, it had a solid front axle and every thing was for sure stout on the suspension. What little ride comfort we traded for the HD of a solid axle was not as worth it in the long run. If I come across something like it again I will pounce on the offer and make the upgrades to it instead of buying a new outfit. The new trucks are just getting cheaper and cheaper made, 10 years and you need a new one.
Rays PU is still rolling down the road, and I don’t think he is out to trade it off on a new piece of tin foil truck!
Happy Trails!!!

RVHH Chief Cook and Bottle Washer - LoveYourRV.comJune 29, 2015 at 5:33 pm #11850Well as things go we struck out from the house, got ten mile up the road and something give loose . It was the fan clutch or fan blades, which tore the shroud apart and don’t think it got into rad. account didn’t see any leaks. We called a friend here with a f/w and he wasn’t home but we got him to call someone else and they came and got f/w took it home and as he was unloading it wife said guy forgot to drop tailgate. Pulled out from under so you know what happen there. I was still with truck letting it cool off before I tried to get to shop. I drove it and it stayed ok with the temp. With July 4th approaching might be next week getting away now. Oh well just going through what a lot of yall have. Hurts though having prepared getting truck ready and this minor delay. Could have been a lot worse so I must be greatful I was at home, truck was drivable and rv got home.

RVHH Chief Cook and Bottle Washer - LoveYourRV.comJune 29, 2015 at 9:07 pm #11860Hay Rush, did your serpentine belt come apart? I had one brake and played havoc under the hood, plastic broken everywhere! I liked the old V-belts, one for each assery on the engine. When one went you could limp in with what you had.
You’re just going to have to slow it down to 120 MPH or so!!! Ha!! Ha!!
Good luck and give us an update on your repairs.
Happy Trails!?…………………Well when you get on the trail!!!!

June 30, 2015 at 6:08 am #11877When what ever happen happened, I could tell it wasn’t the serpentine. You know how they sound, like all hell is coming lose. It was gentle in noise almost like subtle but it was there. What I seen when I raised hood was the shroud was separate and looked between it and motor and the fan blades had some notches where it got shroud. I tell ya about it when we get there. It was weird though how easy but so destructive. That fan clutch kicked in and next thing was the shroud raising hell getting spanked by the blades.
