Last year we spent a great summer in Campbell River BC on Vancouver Island. We were treated to large doses of wildlife viewing opportunities. One thing this area has in spades is eagles.

With huge runs of salmon returning and traveling through the local waters every year and cool, fresh fast-moving ocean current, there is lots of food available. In fact, it is home to a return of some of the largest salmon in the world, locally known as the Tyee salmon.

See my blog post about the famous Tyee Fishing Club.

I thought it was amazing last year when I saw 6 large eagles perched together in a single fir tree, but this tops the cake. Just across the street from where we are camped at the Thunder Bird RV Park Anne spotted 15 eagles on the rocky beach, all within a few hundred years of each other!

One of the eagles had a fisherman’s cast off fishes head and bones and was going to town on. The beautiful juvenile eagle was only 30 feet or so from our vantage point at the high tide line in among the driftwood.

What a spectacle! It was a thrill to see these majestic birds so close up in the wild.

I apologize for the wind noise and shakiness, but I only had one brief shot to capture the scene and mother nature was writing the script. :)

This looks like such fun.  How much of a pain is it to get out on the island.  I’m assuming that the BC ferries are quite expensive?  Where did you cross on to the island, Vancouver or Port Angeles,Washington?

We're occasional RVers for now, but that's all going to change when I retire in a little over a year.

The travel is fairly easy, ferries are large and easy to navigate onto and off. Cost is high if you are only coming for a short trip. It’s around $220 each way for our 45-foot rig. We always use the Port Angeles Black Ball route. That way we do the ferry and border crossing in one go.
