Load test on Chevy Volt Lithium Batteries going well. Solar panels are facing East and West, to they are not putting out the max while the Montana is in storage. Today’s max output was 536 Watts (out 820 Watts), but I still harvested 340 AH (4160 Watt Hours) today. Overnight batteries were down 184 AH, with Residential Fridge and Satellite…[Read more]

I installed the hitch on my 2015 Montana. I put a couple of wheels on it two since there are a couple of places going into storage, where the back of the Montana has only 1/2 to 1″ from hitting the ground.

I have the Lithium Batteries installed in the Montana. A little set back, my water pump is DOA, but everything else working as expected. Started load testing this morning, which was mostly cloudy today. I turned on the Inverter, Sat Receiver, and Residential Fridge this morning. Will let it run all night and check tomorrow morning. Hi Folks,

My six Trojan T-105 Golf Cart batteries are about done. So I am building the next generation battery system. Lithium Batteries from a Chevy Volt. See the link for more details and pictures.

Looks like it takes a bit of management and know how to make use of Lithium batteries in an RV. At this point, they strike me as only suitable for a techie type of person, or risk destroying some expensive batteries.
Will be nice to follow your progress. Thanks for being the guinea pig. :)

Making progress on my Battery Pack Management System. I have the Arduino connected to the Local Area network, so I can view status with my PC or cell phone. I have the wiring and programming for the first of four battery packs done. I still need to wire the circuit for water pump, fan and heater, but I have the rough programming done.

    Hi Folks,

I am currently working on a new battery system using Chevy Volt Lithium-Ion Battery Packs. I think I am almost done prototyping, and have started work on the finish design. I will plan to do a blog post on it with lots of pictures when I get to that stage.

@bowhunter Hi John, if you are 62 or older, get the America The Beautiful (U.S. National Park Service), $10 (for life), you can get at most National Parks. Gets you in to National Parks free where there is entrance fee, and half off camping at National Forest, National Parks, and COE campgrounds.

    Mike,

Are you hooked up to shore power or are you boondocking?

Like Ray said, sounds like low voltage (could be lose ground too).  Make sure your Red Battery Key is turned so it can’t be removed.  If you can currently remove the key, the charging power to the battery is off (this is another common problem, don’t ask how I know).  The key tu…[Read more]

    Mike,

Are you slides hydraulic ?  If there is a 50 AMP auto reset breaker near the battery.  Many of us have replaced them with 80-100 AMP manual audio circuit breakers.

Also check and make sure you have good ground, that is another common problem.

@wanderinggypsy Hi Spirit, since I don’t have reference here, how are you hooking up the inverter to the loads in the trailer?

If it is feeding the main panel (like mine), you need to turn the circuit breaker off for the Converter (AC to DC). Otherwise your Inverter (DC to AC), pull power from the batteries, and the Converter tries to put those…[Read more]

Good question John…. I really do not know. An inverter was already installed bef I bought the rig and it is set up with the tv/dvd/vhs system area. I better look into this transfer switch thing. This is a bit scary :(

      • Profile picture of John R Walker
John R Walker replied 6 months, 2 weeks ago

Spirit, all the plugs have power when on the inverter is on, means they powered the panel. Some inverters have a transfer switch built in, but can only be used with 30 Amp systems. You should here a click sound, when you plug in to shore power, most have a delay built in.

At any rate make sure the Converter is off while using the inverter,…[Read more]

None of my outlets have any power John. I am connected directly to the 30 amp inverter. I won’t be connecting to shore power any time soon and will disconnect my solar panels before I do as I now know something isn’t done correctly :( Thanks for the help!

Spirit, so you have the RV power cord plug into to the Inverter ? If so you need to flip the Converter circuit breaker off.

Hi John, I have an extension cord plugged into the inverter and I plug into that my tv and dvd player or I charge a handful of devices. Weighs in at 80 lbs, and I have no problem lifting it in or out of the truck. Picked up off of Amazon $767. Saw it putting out 34 Amps at one time when I had the AC running…
