Got an email from a reader named Dan, he added the shoe cubby mod I did but also put in an extra drawer above. Love It!

He was kind enough to let me share the mod here.

I followed your lead and built the shoe cupboards just inside the door – same as you did.  I then built in a drawer above them, there is space for a good sized 14” x 14” drawer which we use for everything that doesn’t have another place in the unit, like pens, flashlights, post-em notes, etc.  I had to take off the wood panel across the whole length of the under-counter cabinet and cut it down in size, then I built a new frame for the drawer by removing/replacing the frames behind the other two drawers under the counter.
I built the drawer and installed it on rollers the same as the ones that Keystone used in the Cougar (they were available at Home Hardware for $6.25 a pair).  We found a drawer front almost identical to the two other drawers, they came from a kitchen renovation job.  I took the door handle off the cabinet under the bedroom sink and put it on the new drawer so it would match with the other two, then I put a pretty closely matched handle on the bedroom cabinet that I found at Lee Valley for $2.50.
All in all the job cost about $10 and it is just great to have a junk drawer right where it is located, and needed.  Why didn’t Keystone put one there in the first place?.

Here is the front view of the finished drawer and shoe cupboards, see the drawer front matched up pretty well especially when the same handle is used.

Here is a view of the drawer partially open. In all it is 14 inches deep. It stops just before the back hits the sink.

Here is a view from inside the space, shot through the removed second drawer.

I was able to do this mod on my Cougar as well. I’m getting rid of the small end table between our recliners in favor of a moveable table I can use as a computer desk, so I took the drawer and hardware from it and made it fit.

Looks pretty good. Good place for a junk drawer right beside the entrance.
