Recently I have been noticing odors getting into the coach of my class C motorhome from the grey water tank. After some research, I found that the factory vent caps actually pressurize holding tanks when driving or if there is a strong wind. This pressure then forces gases into the coach through any miniscule leaks in the waste plumbing to the sinks. I went online to find a solution. There are several contraptions and even vent fans and filters one can buy to remedy the problem. However, I decided to simply put the “venturi principle” to work in an experiment. Those of you familiar with the old carburetors we used to have on our cars will know what I’m talking about. The venturi principle is the affect moving air over an opening has on the pressure inside that opening…it reduces the pressure and actually draws air out of the container. An example of this is when you are driving down the highway at 60 MPH and roll down a window, air gets drawn out of the car.

I decided to do an experiment to verify my theory. I simply drilled several small holes in the factory vent cap and duct taped all around the sides. This would serve to allow the venturi principle to draw gasses out of the vent pipe when ever the wind blew or I was driving down the highway.

Guess what? NO MORE HOLDING TANK GASSES IN THE COACH!

I do plan to replace the duct tape with something more permanent…perhaps some of the tape used to repair rubber roofs.

Some of you may ask “What about rain getting in through the holes I drilled?” It’s not an issue since any rain (which wouldn’t be much) would simply drip down the vent pipe to the holding tank.

    :bye:

    Smart mod Dave!

I think this one – 360 Siphon RV Fume Extractor uses the same principle. I’m going to be getting one soon to review. We give it a go and report back.
