Yesterday we sold our Keystone Cougar 25RLS WE travel trailer. We sold our GMC ½ ton already so we’re going to be without a tow vehicle until September, at least (yes, the salesman promised that the new GMC Duramax would be in before the 4th of July which has magically turned into September). So we’ve decided to upgrade to a 5th wheel at the same time, probably 32 to 34’ & 9 to 10,000lbs.

What does everyone think? We loved the Cougar bumper-pull trailer, but would be open to suggestions about brands of 5th wheels. Also, what about sliding 5th wheel hitches? The new truck is going to have 6 ¾’ bed so I’m guessing that we’re going to have to have a sliding hitch? Any input would be appreciated.

Absolutely go with the sliding 5′ver hitch.  Gives extra turning room so you can avoid the cab / trailer crunch.  A little more expensive than a plain hitch but worth the $$.

The Cougars are very nice. Much improved decors/colours in the past few years.  We almost went with the 333mks but ended up going a bit bigger and got a Mountaineer 331.  You didn’t say if you are going with a 3/4T or 1T but most new 3/4 T with a diesel should have enough payload capacity for a 10,000# 5er but a 1T would give you more reserve capability.

Weve looked at a lot of different units in the past few years and they all are built similarly so go with the floorplan that works best and one that gives you the best bang for $.  It’s hard to know but try to find a good dealer who will look after you and the problems that will crop up.

if you go with a slider get the auto so you can forget about it and not have to jump in and out of the truck to pull the pin.  We went with a Sidewinder with the Airborne Pinbox.  Lots of turning clearance, less chucking and standard hitch is lighter and easier to get out of the truck if you want to use the box.

    happy shopping
