I want to replace my (perfectly fine) microwave with a convection model. It is currently “over the range” but the venting for the stove is built into the cabinet, not the microwave. I don’t have to pay extra for an “over the range” model, do I? Isn’t that just a standard microwave in there? Am I missing something? I just don’t want to have to pay more than I need to as I’m
cheapfrugal.

It would depend on how large the cabinet space is for the microwave. I had a look at the Dometic website, it would appear that RV microwaves are about 5″ shallower than conventional countertop units. HOWEVER, as Lurch is an older unit, that may not have been true when he was built. Probably the only way to find out is pull the existing unit out and measure the depth. The power requirements are the same, so no heavier wiring or breakers would have to be changed. GE has some really nice trim kits to give it a built in look, and may help restrain it when travelling!
I was looking at reviews on Amazon, and some of the units people are talking about excessive heat during the convection process. Is this going to be a problem inside that cabinet?
I’m wondering if that’s true of the process in general.
I just love to bake and the toaster oven is getting restrictive. I have one of those L-shaped kitchens with the only counter space in the corner…I suppose I could put a countertop model there…it’s not like I can really use that space anyway. When I do dishes I put a towel on the stove topper. It sucks to be short…. :P

Looks like the convection part has it’s own heating element, so I’d expect a hotter case than just a microwave. The combination setting looks interesting, but I’d probably have to learn cooking all over again to get food right. If you look on the GE site, there are user manuals, and their countertop units are supposed to be able to be put in cabinets. I don’t if that’s true of other makes.

My stick house microwave has died and we hadn’t missed it but then we have a convection oven and an induction stove top.
