Boondockers 2 months, 1 week ago · updated 2 weeks, 3 days agoJust reading these posts on solar. We had solar installed on our 5th wheel and the first time we went boondocking discovered the inverter was defective. The company fedexed a replacement to the nearest RV Dealer and it was replaced free of charge. Great service. Then we traded our rig in for a brand new one, had solar installed again. That…[Read more]

Virginia & Don replied to the topic Decent, inexpensive all around spray cleaner in the forum Tips and Tricks 3 months, 3 weeks ago
I generally make my own cleaner (for inside). I take a spray bottle, add about a cup of vinegar and about a tablespoon of Dawn dish detergent and then fill up with water. It is non toxic, antibacterial. If you want it to smell good, add a few drops of essential oil of your choice. Lavender is always nice.
My doctor told me to stop using the…[Read more]
We are no longer newbies, having traveled over 16,000 kilometers now. From Vancouver Island to Whitehorse, to Newfoundland and now back to Nova Scotia, preparing to head back west. We will be extending our 3 month trip by another two weeks because there are a few places we still want to visit.
We are thinking about trading in our rig on…[Read more]

What an awesome trip! Too bad about the wrist.

Every rig has tradeoffs in size, weight, storage and layouts. At least now that you have experience it should make finding a suitable unit a little easier.
Rear kitchens are nicer I find for the cooking space offered and convenient in and out access.
Drawbacks I think is a darker rig and having…[Read more]-
Yes, we really like the big window at the back of the rig and the two chairs with the couch. The only thing I don’t like is that you have to move that chair to put the slide in. A bit of a pain.

Update on our travels. No longer newbies! Oh, my goodness the things we have learned that we did not want to learn!
From smoking our brakes going downhill from Pemberton to Lillooet up to the things we learned today! The brake issue was because the brake controller worked on the horizontal and not the vertical, the way it was installed. Once we…[Read more]

Each of those are oh so scary and we are newbies also and some of the ppl here have seen how we have been shafted by one mechanic after the other going from state to state and breaking down every 30-50 miles. By luck I had already planned Clearfield, Pennsylvania to be our stop and good thing as there were 3 major accidents that we could have…[Read more]

I think we newbies must have a secret mark on our rigs that lets people know we are newbies so they can take advantage of us! I looked at a new rig yesterday but just can’t spend that kind of money and justify it. Onward and forward. Are we having fun yet?

-
I look like a newbie with my vintage rig but my rig should also show that I don’t have a wallet that doesn’t empty Virginia and Don. I would like to have a rig maybe 5 yrs old but I just can’t afford it. I do like my 32′ with the 3′ rear deck but it really lacks lower compartment space. We are still in the couple’s yard in Clearfield, PA and will…[Read more]

That’s awful service but sadly more common these days. Thanks for sharing the lesson, glad nothing major happened.

Virginia & Don, good thing you got it caught it in time! I can sympathize because we have been there before. In 2010 we were heading east through Oklahoma City on I-40 and hit a pot hole big enough to park a VW bus in. Long story short our rear tire & wheel passed us and went off the road, luckily we were on the inside lane and got the 5er off the…[Read more]

Yall sure making this newbie feel good, within days of leaving(we hope after a ten day delay) on our retirement trip. On well, off we go and wonder whats next. Fun we are sure.

The good thing is that we have met many good people who have helped us along the way. Even this morning before we left our overnight spot, the fellow next to us gave us a lot of helpful information.
We are parked in a Walmart right now where there are no overnight parking signs all over the place. There are probably about 10 other rigs here too.…[Read more]

I have noticed that Walmarts that state no parking do allow it and now I know why, the city/town by-laws. I have seen Semi’s with trailers staying.

If you find you are applying the breaks to much slow your speed down and shift into another gear. Use the motor and transmission to do most the work, One thing to consider is when you smoke breaks and then let up on the brakes air gets in between the pads and drum and a fire can occur, That can be one fire that you can not put out. When you get…[Read more]

Yup, that works but when you have a heavy 5th wheel without brakes pushing you down the hill, your truck brakes take a beating. That was the problem. The electric brake controller wasn’t set up properly and the trailer brakes weren’t working at all. We’ve corrected the problem and have done some pretty good grades since then without any trouble.…[Read more]

I can usually head down an 8% or better grade and leave in 2nd gear at about 35 – 40 mph, rarely have to touch the brakes. Engine and tranny hold her back. That way I save the brakes in case I suddenly really need them. Probably helps that my rear end is 4.11 ratio.
-
Our new F-350 has like a lot of the new trucks the Engine Brake system. It sure was nice going down grades. Made a big difference, instead of having to apply brake she was downshifting to a lower gear and doing the job.
-
Like Rush’s truck, I installed a Banks exhaust brake on our 2002 Chevy Durmax diesel. It has saved our brakes on the truck and trailer also. I’m a CDL truck driver and know the importance of a good engine brake.(Jake brake or retarder system)
Happy Trails!!!

Did you have any trouble getting your rig onto the ferry? We’ve been thinking about going out on to the island, but I’m concerned about getting on and off the ferry. I understand that it’s quite expensive.
-
Got back to “civilization” and wifi connection from Barkerville/Wells. We are now sitting on the bank of the Peace River near Hudson Hope, BC.
The ferry cost us $288 from Comox to Powell River and then the Langdale to Horseshoe Bay Ferry was another $288. We are 50 feet long overall. Someone in the tourism business in Powell River was on that…[Read more]

Started our journey across Canada and are working out all the bugs. Brake issues big time going down mountainsides. Smoking like crazy. Stopped for adjustments. Solar panel inverter issues as well. Glad they are happening now.
Also traveling with a broken wrist. Good way to start a 2 month vacation, eh!

Wondering about mobile internet options for traveling across Canada. So far it seems so extremely expensive. Also, does anyone know if you can still get TV signals with the antennae or is that past technology.

If your TV has a built in OTA (over the air) digital tuner then you will still pick up stations after a rescan when at a new place. We get HD and digital stations with our regular RV batwing antenna on Vancouver Island, and I added an extra bit for better digital reception in fringe areas.

I guess it would depend on how often and many channel you want!! – Nancy

Checked out our TV and in theory it should work with the antenna. Will give it a try next weekend. What internet options for travel across Canada work best other than the wifi in the RV parks. I’ve been looking at the stick options and it gets really pricy. I have 2GB on my phone but have been told that a Netflix movie takes up about 750MB so two…[Read more]

I’ve researched Bell and Rogers now. Rogers comes out much, much cheaper for mobile internet AND their charges don’t double up like Bell does. You pay a minimum of $25 for the first 200MB and then you pay for each tier up, not the tiers combined. 3GB is $45. 6GB is $65. Up to 10GB is $85 and if you go over that, it is $10/GB. Boy, do you have to…[Read more]

Real newbies at this and are planning our trip across Canada this summer. We will be taking our little dog and our cat with us. Just wondering where to put the litter box for the cat. We’re going through the EXACT same thing right now! It’s back at Camping World right now. We were also told it was only legal to connect one leg of the electrical system so we had to choose which side of plugs we wanted to use. Has anyone ever heard of this?
I don’t trust Camping World to know what they are doing. I have talked to too many people who had problems with installations and went to the next CW to be told it wasn’t done properly. Call the company that built the equipment and get a referral from them.
Not knowing any better in 2010 I had asked Camping World to install a solar system large enough so that I’d never have to run my generator unless the weather was poor. I wasn’t satisfied with the 246 watts installed and later attended a AM Solar seminar at a rally we were at in Oregon. AM Solar added another 200 watts but had to replace the wiring…[Read more]
We use CW to wishbook then go to Walmart or somewhere else and get what we want at better price.
Always make sure the person is a specialist in what you need whine comes to electrical. One wrong mixup in wiring can cause a fire.
