New blog post detailing the repair – Repairing My Broken Fifth Wheel Landing Leg

The passenger side landing jack on our Keystone Cougar fifth wheel suffered a major failure last week. I was in the process of jacking the trailer off the truck when I heard and felt a loud clunk. In fact my wife who was inside setting things up immediately looked out the window and ask “What the heck was that?”. “Not sure” I replied, but I knew something was not right with the jacks.

Good info Ray. We had our first jack failure  (both) at our second stop over when we first hit the road in June 2010! It was covered under warranty however the mobile tech was told by the manufacturer that we must have dropped our rig in order to have a double failure. We had just picked up our rig from Camping World after they did our initial solar install. I know we never dropped our rig but between the factory, the dealer we purchased it from, and Camping World who knows. Our most recent failure was last summer. The motor had been sounding laboured for a few months so we were booked in to have it replaced as I was now having to use my hydraulic jack to raise and lower our rig. As I disconnected our rig from the truck the passenger side jack collapsed just like yours. They replaced both the jack and motor so I now have a spare motor.

I’ve seen RV dealers/service centers that use forklifts to move the rigs around. They just leave the jacks out and lift up buy the kingpin. Wonder if they are always so gentle putting them down especially when rushed and forklift likely driven around by a lot boy.

Yep…that’s how they normally move them and I suspect that’s what probably happened.

    Cheers!

I can tell you from watching the guys use “yard dogs” to move the trailers where I work, that your hunches are correct.  The old-timers who care about their company/job/work are careful.  The others don’t give a hoot and just want to get it done as fast as possible.  We fix landing gears on a pretty regular basis around here.
