Hi all… We’re going to be heading out for our very first RV adventure in a couple of weeks – going to SC & Georgia then to Florida. What has your experiences been like going over the border in an RV (Canada to US)? We cross many times in our regular vehicle but I’m wondering if it’ll be any different in the rig? We have no intentions of bringing anything but necessities, I won’t even bring food over so we’ll have to stop in Buffalo for groceries.

Also, it’ll be the first time we’ll be bringing our two dogs – we will have all paperwork/rabies certs but is there any additional process/issues with dogs?

I’d love to hear your experiences with customs. Thanks!

Hubby and I just bought our first RV - so much to learn but we're having a great time! Our blog is www.outlawpilots.com.

Never had too many problems crossing. Done it many times now. Usually they ask a few questions on where your going and for how long and wave us through. Twice they have searched the trailer looking for food items that aren’t allow like fruits mostly citrus or certain vegetables like tomatos. Once they took Anne and I in to the office and scan our retinas and fingerprinted us for Homeland Security. That was the first time we were headed down for the full six months

Never have even asked about the dog, but I bring a note from the vet stating she is in good health and has the up to date shots, Rabies being the biggie. Also if you bring in dog food keep it sealed and in the original bag in case they want to look at the ingredients. Sometimes certain meats will be banned, like when mad cow was a big thing a few years back.

Bringing firewood is usually a no no

The customs website will have the latest things that aren’t allowed in.

One thing I’ve learned is you just never know what questions they will ask, usually we are surprised, it’s never predictable.

I hear coming back to Canada is becoming a bigger headache with the border agents getting picky about receipts and declaring all purchases.

A few RVing folks I know have been really harassed about it. They seem to be looking for all the money they can get out of us.
