Finally got around to installing my Progressive Industries EMS and none too soon as we head south for the winter in another couple of weeks. The install in my previous Cougar went much easier partially due to the easier access to the incoming cable which was located in a cabinet between the chairs at the back of the trailer. Also that trailer was a 30 amp and the wiring for my Mountaineer is for 50Amp and the wires are much thicker and less flexible when trying to get them hooked up inside the EMS box.
I removed the rear door side panel in the basement to locate the main cable which ran from the back of the trailer along the underbelly. Cutting the cable was no problem and there was plenty of room to mount the EMS box. As I was right under the stairs, the wood grates on the stair risers were right in front of me and a perfect location for the remote display. The most difficult part was trying to manipulate the heavy 6 gauge wire inside the box and lining up to the connectors. This was particularly frustrating on the Output side of the box as you also have to slip 2 of the wires through current sensors. If PI could make the box 1″ bigger on the Output side there would have been much less blue smoke. The cable from the main box to the remote sensor slipped nicely through the wood grates on the stair risers and I screwed the remote sensor to the front of the grate. Should be easily viewable from the living area and shouldn’t present a clearance problem when going up the stairs.
Plugged everything in and it went through the start up sequence with no problems. Got everything back together and amazingly enough no parts left over. So this plus the Smart tile backsplash in the kitchen makes 2 upgrades, both successful. Maybe I’m getting good at this.

I have the 30 amp one installed like you had before in between the rear chairs. Really like the unit and the remote display. http://www.loveyourrv.com/progressive-industries-model-ems-hw30c/

October 23, 2014 at 10:38 pm #6897Hi Bruce, as Ray and Dan said good install! I need to get a surge protector but need to clean up the factory wiring job in back of the load center box before I tackle this idea.
Happy Trails!!!
