If you have a 90’s vintage Ford truck this post may be of interest.

I just spent the day replacing a burnt out headlight switch. Looks like I got it changed out in the nick of time.

We used to see a lot of failures of this type once halogen headlights came on the market. The repair at that time was to put each headlight on a separate relay in the engine compartment, with the original wiring acting as a signal source.

    That’s a good idea Roger.

Looked like it was the original Ford switch so hopefully I’m good for another 20 years. I think having changed out all my trailer lights to LED should help reduce the load on the truck electrical. Likely will do the same with the trucks marker lights next.

I’m not sure about a 1994, but some of the Ford cruise controls require incandescent brake light bulbs. The filament acts as a ground for the cruise, when power is applied by the brake light switch, the voltage difference between the positive and ground connection become close to zero, shutting off the cruise. After installing LED tail lights in my old motor home, the cruise wouldn’t work, I ended up with an 1157 bulb inside the dash to make it functional again.

Thanks for the info Roger. I have the big red Ford shop manuals for the truck so will have a look at the electrical diagrams and see if this is the case. I will likely start with all the marker lights first, the truck has 22! Looks pretty cool at night. ;)

    Good Job Ray!,

Our first Class C was a 1983 Ford E350 and the headlight switch ended up being the reason that the headlights would decide to turn off anytime and anywhere they pleased.. generally in the worst places like the thruway! It would make driving a little more exciting, to say the least…

My 97 dually would do that in the middle of the night. That would make you pucker up. After I replaced the switch I made sure I had a spare
