We just hooked up with a Verizoin Prepaid Mifi monthly, no contract plan for 90 dollars for 10 gig of data. The other choices were 3 gigs for 60 dollars or 250 meg per week for 15 dollars. We are heavy users. We already had a MiFi from a previous plan and were able to reuse that. Just took it to a Verizon store and the girl set it all up.

The good part about this plan is it is month to month, which is good for Canadians as being month to month we can easily not use it while home, where as with the 2 year plan it was a pain to keep putting it into vacation mode.
November 6, 2014 at 5:47 am #7234So do 10 gigs last you a month ok or do you have to monitor the use to stay with in it?
November 6, 2014 at 8:40 am #7238Most months we stay within it. But Anne and I are very heavy users as we both run 2 websites, I think for the average couple that would be tons. Only thing you would need to watch out for is video. Streaming video like Netflix can eat up bandwidth fast, especially on 4G. The device has a read out telling us the data used and also will warn us when we hit certain levels so we know where we are during the month.
One thing that my device can do is be configured to switch off 4G and make it only connect to 3G. I find the 3G is fast enough in most cases and saves us quite a bit of data.
I’m not sure if the newer devices have this option, ours is about 2 years old now.
November 6, 2014 at 10:47 am #7241WE have a 14gb plan with Verizon. Two cell phones and three tablets are on the plan. EMails web surfing we don’t hit close to it. Like Ray said watch out for videos. Our plan allows us to lower or raise the gb per month. If we are close to 14gb wife increases our plan. If we see we are way low she lowers it. She is able to change it on the web site, no penalties.
James and Michelle just a strollinNovember 6, 2014 at 7:58 pm #7244Ray,
Sounds like a good deal! We’re not sure what we’re gonna do yet when it comes to data. We have another 269 days to figure it out though!
November 6, 2014 at 9:44 pm #7248I have a Bell MiFi 2 I bought last summer, my choices are automatic (LTE,4G,3G,2G), LTE only, and 2G only. There’s no option to go 3G only.
November 6, 2014 at 9:45 pm #7249Might have been a cheaper plan with other carriers but Verizon coverage has been very good for us out west, especially since we like to explore less populated areas. I have had a Sprint based MiFi and it only worked well near larger towns and cities and close to the interstate highways.
November 7, 2014 at 9:40 am #7261Last year I ran from San Antonio Tx to Los Angeles Ca on interstate 10, then from Los Angeles Ca up 101 to san Francisco Ca then back down interstate 5 to Los Angeles. I had an att, t mobile, and Verizon hotspot.
Att was horrible, In San Antonio couldn’t hold a signal and the whole route was terrible service. No service at all between San Antonio and EL Paso.
T mobile was hit and miss, more miss. Only reliable in the cities.
Verizon was the best. I was getting internet in areas I would of never expected to get. The wife, my daughter and her live in sin boy friend were on the net using it as I drove. It may sound crazy but they had tablets and laptops hooked up to the different providers and all of them said Verizon was pretty much always on. We figured approx. 80% it was throwing out signals. What was funny was wife would get a text and she would start laughing, then daughter would get a text and she would start laughing. I found out instead of talking to each other they were texting each other. You have to love this new generation
James and Michelle just a strollinNovember 8, 2014 at 7:17 am #7286Good to know about the the service from verizon, Right now we have AT&T and still have about 18 months on contract but will looking. We will be traveling more eastern and south eastern and high central plains (Wyoming, South Dakota, Montana) We will just have to see what kind of service we get. with AT&T when we first start out.
November 8, 2014 at 3:54 pm #7295We have Verizon jet pack for about a year and like it. Someone mentioned I believe millicon or something that sounds like it,they use Verizon towers and had great deals, never checked into it until our contract is up.

Well that just sucks. I was really counting on Millenicom for that 20 gig plan.

Really? Never knew that, guess it is good we kept our old one. Last campsite we were in the internet was slow with 4G even with our booster, switched it to 3G and it was a lot faster. My theory is with all the 4G devices now some cell towers get overloaded on the 4G band but 3G is less used now. I’m sure they will phase it out though.
November 16, 2014 at 8:55 pm #7475All good things come to an end eventually! We’re on 4g for cell service now, not sure what we’ll do when we hit the road full time.
