Greasing wheel bearings is important to do every 6 years or 50,000 miles. We recently posted ‘how to’ steps to do your own. Hope this is helpful….

January 21, 2015 at 6:05 pm #8562Excellent write up , thanks. I will share it around.
I had thought about doing my trailer bearings myself but in a campground or RV park it can get a bit messy, most don’t appreciate it.
so had to let an RV shop do them. For trailer bearings they advise doing them more often. Most manuals say every year, seems a little much to me though.
LoveYourRV.comFebruary 5, 2015 at 11:18 pm #8913Please teach me…. I have a 23 ft ultra-lite TT with 2 axles. I have learned I have 4 inside bearings and 4 outside bearings. In the 2 yrs and 4 months we have owned this trailer and been on the road, we have only had them serviced once. We travel full-time, going about 20k/yr.
How often is best to grease bearings?
What do you think of Bearing Buddies?
How many would I need to buy…. 4 or 8?
Do you think I could pay some shop $xx to install them and teach me what to look for as far as seals, brakes, proper grease kind and amount while in there? We are stationary for a couple of weeks so would like to get these ordered and delivered here. (Wrist fusion happening on Monday.)

February 6, 2015 at 8:17 am #8915Repacking, inspecting the bearings, changing out the seals is pretty easy – http://www.etrailer.com/faq-wheelbearingpack.aspx
But it is messy! It’s not something I would want to do in a campground or RV parks so I take it to a mechanic. Last time it was 199$, I have mine done every 10,000 – 15,000 miles. Our trailer has the Easy lube bearings so a twice a year I add a couple shots of grease while spinning the wheel, not sure it really does much…
I think you’ll find the most mechanics don’t have a high opinion of the Buddy Bearings or Easy Lube bearings, They seem to cause more problems than they are worth. People over do it with the grease and push it past the rear seal and into the brakes, not good!
Funny thing is the manual I have for the axles says you still have to repack and inspect the bearings, change out the seals every year even with the Easy lube/Buddy bearing system, so they don’t really save you anything. IMHO
LoveYourRV.comFebruary 6, 2015 at 10:18 am #8916Thank you Ray for the informative response. I watched a youtube official video from the BB company and heard them say to continue annual servicing! Guess that might be because they are designed for in and out of water for boat in/out, not rv’s going down a usually dry road.
Since we have the small trailer, could we go to a car place? Or would an rv place charge about the same and ‘know more’?
I’ll dump your poo tank! You’re welcome!
February 6, 2015 at 11:22 am #8917If you know a good RV service company it’s OK to go with them, as they will have lots of experience with trailer axles and wheels and are likely to have all the parts in stock or know where to quickly get them. Another thought is a company the specializes just in trailers.
Here is another video from Etrailer showing how to service the bearings, I find the site to have lots of good info.

Thanks so much for the dump! haha
