Ok- I’ll admit it- I hate bugs.. maybe I won’t make it as a camper but yuck to horseflies, wasps, and mosquitoes.

So where do I avoid camping in the summer then? Yes, Ray I know where you told me you go- I’d like to know what everyone else is doing. Do you avoid the buggy areas or do you travel wherever?
I’d love to know your thoughts on bugs!
July 1, 2014 at 8:03 pm #4976Its hard to escape all creepy crawly flying things, but I like the beach because there is little vegetation to attract critters, its too hot for most bugs, by the water there is usually a breeze to keep bugs away and the sunsets and sun rises are awesome.
July 1, 2014 at 8:06 pm #4978thanks Gail. keeping all this in mind

A lot of it for us is having the time to get over to the coast…and then back home again.. hubby still not retired so we try to make the best of the holiday time he does have. usually like to do a few trips a year..mostly flying to location.
This weekend will be our first trip out with the rv…which I am hoping to blog @ oneincomedollar.com
July 2, 2014 at 6:33 am #4985Gail hit the wasp on the stinger – get by the shore of a large body of water. There is usually a breeze to keep the little buggers away. I grew up in eastern Ontario so biting bugs were a normal part of life. When we moved up to the shores of Lake Huron it was like heaven (bug wise). Very few biting bugs here because there is almost always a good breeze. Not too sure how we are going to handle the trips for the rest of the summer as they will be to in-land lake areas. There are a couple of home made insect repellants posted on this web site which we will try.
Good luck with your trip – take after bite and use liberally.
July 2, 2014 at 6:38 am #4987Funny you should mention that…just saw a tip this morning to put dryer softener sheets (1 or 2) in your pocket and 1 in your socks to keep away mosquitoes and flies.

July 2, 2014 at 6:47 am #4989hi Norma- we have some of those mosquito bracelets so will try those out and wonder as well if just leaving dryer sheets throughout the rv will keep them away inside as well?
July 2, 2014 at 6:48 am #4990Will keep that in mind. Do you know if higher elevations or the mountain air keeps them away as well?
July 2, 2014 at 9:19 am #4992I find bugs love humidity, so if an area is fairly humid you’re likely to find bugs, so the drier the air the better.
Many campers in heavy bug areas bring along a bug tent so they can still enjoy the outdoors.

July 2, 2014 at 10:15 am #4996We have a screened tent, that we are keeping! Bugs, I have found are everywhere! The only ones I can’t stand are tic’s. Mosquitoes are an annoyance. Hope you have a great trip, without bugs!
July 2, 2014 at 11:01 am #4997We live near Lyme,CT that tic carrying Lyme disease was named. With our Deer population we have tics of all sizes! sorry to say but you probably should stay way from here. I also find the our biting green head ( or Horse ) flies like the beach! – Nancy

July 2, 2014 at 12:39 pm #5005You know what I hate to tell everyone this, but bugs just love to eat me, no matter where we are and what part of the country we are in, if there is bitey but, within a 100 miles of us, it is going to find me and have a feast. I havent found anything that works all that well, the buts just love me. And cause was around horses and animals all my life the horseflys love me also. Ick to bugs, like the tent, but they would probably figure out how to get into me. Aileen
July 2, 2014 at 1:11 pm #5009Thanks everyone for your input on the bugs- I’ll be sure to let you know how it goes.
July 3, 2014 at 6:50 am #5010We have an EZ Up screened enclosure. We never thought about taking it with us when we full time but now we think we will! Thinking about living in warm weather most all the year is very foreign to us New Englanders. We have a short bug season, but we like being outside with a glass of ice tea in the evening! Screened area sounds like a good idea! -Nancy

July 3, 2014 at 7:59 am #5012I think I’m gonna get one too. LOVE the UV protection on it. That would sure help at the lake where there is a ton of reflective UV baking my face…
