In this how to video, I install a new Progressive Dynamics INTELI-POWER 9200 series converter charger into my fifth wheel trailer.

Our original equipment converter does a poor job of charging so with this upgrade I should reduce generator run time and treat my batteries much better.

I mounted it right beside my battery bank for less wire loss. I plan to use it mostly for off grid boondocking when I need to charge up my battery bank and solar is not available.

I detail the install wiring and report on a first test with it and demo it in action.

I was grateful to be helped with the wiring by my good friend Eddie and RVHH member of Mobile Homestead Solar Services

Good job Ray! watched the video again over here at the “Mobile Homestead” and liked it.

Hope it gives you many years of good use, ours is 6-years old now and going strong!

    Happy Trails…Pal!!!

Nice work….But if you don’t have the ground from the new charger going to the shunt on your TriMetric, you are not reading the state of charge from the new charger.  Am I not correct?

Hi RoyB, the ground of the charger is to the RV frame and so is all the loads and the ground side of the shunt. Everything is on the same side of the shunt. So all is good, and his TriMetric is working perfect!

    Happy Trails!!!

As I think about it, since the Trimetric shunt is grounded and the charger is grounded, the trimetric must be seeing the charge current of the charger. But I would think the resistance of the chassis would cause a false reading of the Trimetric.  Now you got me. I might have to give Bogart a call. When I wired mine up I took pains to be sure ALL grounds went to the shunt….www.rvbprecison.com   Thanks

All the negative loads are on one side of the shunt and on the other is only the negative battery terminal. The Trimetric will accurately read all current passing in or out of the battery bank as it’s based on the fix resistance of the shunt and the voltage drop across it.

Ray, did you leave the original inverter hooked up? I assume you did since it must be used when hooked up in a RV park. I am not installing solar but I just ordered the trimetic 2030and the inteli-power will follow soon.

I had a problem 2 years ago when I was hooked up to my generator and I  was also running a battery charger. I did not find out until two weeks later I had blown a fuse on the inverter and my batteries were no longer being charged  while being plugged in at home. As you can imagine I am a bit concerned about having the generator plugged into the 30 amp and charging with the inverter at the same time. Is this a no no???

Yes, the original converter is still hooked up as it was before. Now I can use either one. When boondocking I simply plug the generator into the new converter charger and charge the batteries.

When on full hookups I can use the original or turn off its breaker and use the new one if I like. I’ll likely leave the breaker off and us my new charger as it is a better charger and leave the original charger installed as it is just for a backup or if I ever sell the trailer.

As far as the inverter goes it is completely separate from my converter charger, so is not affected.

MY bad, I used the word inverter instead of CONVERTER. You still managed to answer my question though. When I am hooked to the generator I will pull the fuse on the original converter and use my new intelli converter to charge the batteries.

How the heck did you get a 1/0 cable in that small opening

Just trimmed off some of the wire strands until it was a small enough diameter to fit.

It is too bad they did not put a place to attach terminal lugs. I will be using #2 wire and even that size with the fine strands I find it difficult to insert without possibly breaking off a few strands and then when I tighten the set screw I might break off a couple more. I would not mind this If there was no hope of them getting inside and floating around the circuit board. I guess I worry too much and want to do things right the first time. I will have to remember that things can not always be perfect but still acceptable.
I have been reading everything I can from you, Handyman Bob, and anyone else who has experience in getting set up for boon docking. I have read soooo much I know I have forgotten a lot I read earlier. I have an excuse though, being 65 I do find myself a little forgetful. I will be putting in my converter, inverter, cut off switch, tri-metric 2030 RV this spring and summer and follow up with solar next summer. Hopefully everything will be working as it should by the end of the summer of 2017 and I will retire Nov/Dec 2017 and head south to New Mexico and Arizona for the winters.
I really appreciate all the articles, videos, etc. which I have looked at countless times as it takes a little while for things to sink into my gray matter.
Do you know what I really like about your videos etc., you admit your mistakes and share them with everyone. When I got my pilot’s licence many years ago I read something on one of the safety bulletins we got every month “LEARN FROM THE MISTAKES OF OTHERS AS YOU WILL NOT LIVE LONG ENOUGH TO MAKE THEM ALL YOURSELF”

    Thanks for sharing,
    Wayne
