We’re planning a fall trip to Colorado and we’re wondering about driving Colorado Highway 139 from Rangely to Fruita. We have a 25-foot Class C with Mercedes Chassis. We aren’t concerned about power, but rather if the road is wide enough, safe, etc. On another forum, we’re getting mixed answers, so am looking for advice please. Thank you.

There is a video on Youtube on a large transport truck navigating it.

We drove it last year going north, road was good it is a steep pass you go over just take your time and you should be ok. I was pulling a 36 ft 5th wheel.

    Ray,

Thank you for the video. I’ll take a look at it.

    Dan Huhn,

We read on the Forest River Owners Forum a couple of bad reviews on Hwy 139. One person said there were no guard rails, the road was falling away, and it was only 1.5 cars wide in a lot of areas. That kind of put the fear in us (well, me especially!).

If I do remember right there are a few places that are narrow I can see how it would make someone nervous watch the video Ray posted it will give you an Idea how road is. If you think it is too bad and you feel uncomfortable I would find a different route. I didn’t think it was too bad but that’s just me I also drive big trucks for a living so those types of road don’t make me nervous. I hope this helps you out.

I pulled a 30 ft. trailer down 139 a couple times and there was no problems. Steep by Douglas Pass and great abundant plant fossils by the radar site. The majority of the fossils you will find at this site are leafs and small insects. There are leaf fossils being found regularly that measure over four inches. There has been plenty of insect type fossils found as well and there is a pullout on the opposite side of the road that is challenging to pull out of going north.

Wow, I want to find that road on my motorcycle! I don’t think I would want to do it with my RV though. I think if I had to do it in any kind of rig, I’d rather do it in an 18-wheeler with lots of gears and the jake brakes. My RV doesn’t have all that. But I have to say, I highly doubt that road is on a truck route, not with 15-20 miles per hour curves. But I’ll bet it’s going to be fun as all get-out on my motorcycle!:-)
