I am replacing my TV and old dvd tuner in the 5ver as they are very old and I wish to go HDMI. I know very little about this so I need help. I bought a 28″ HD TV flat screen and now I need to get a receiver that will take my existing 5 speakers. I currently have an old QR-4000 DVD/VCD/CD/MP3/RADIO player. My question is can I go out and buy a regular receiver like a Sony and plug my blue ray and TV into it via a HDMI cables? How will this effect my power drain when I’m boo docking?

    Cheers

Shouldn’t be a problem. Most HDMI receivers will draw around 100-300 max watts depending on how powerful they are. But will likely only draw around 50-100 watts when not thumping the music. You don’t need much power in such a small space and your built in speakers aren’t very powerful so go for a light weight unit. Usually a rule of thumb is the heavier the unit the more power drain.

The important spec isn’t speaker output wattage but AC power consumption wattage. Try to keep it as low as possible for boondocking use. Ideal would be a unit built for use in a very small condo.

Ray…do you know if you can buy a new surround sound system that will plug into your TV by the HDMI cord?

They usually have a HDMI output that goes to the HDMI input on the TV. So everything is switched through the Receiver, then outputted to the TV.

Ray…you do not use a cable box or dish so with your TV do you have a special antenna for HD TV? I have standard antenna with a bat wing attached and I’m not able to even get a signal. My TV says no signal. Do I need to get a analog box or something?

    Thanks.

I have a little add on piece that helps with fringe Digital reception, but a normal batwing can bring in digital as well.

You have to make sure the antenna booster button is on, usually has a little light ours is green, then go into TV setup for reception and switch it from cable to air and find and choose the Scan for Over the Air (OTA) Channels. Won’t be exactly  that but similar, every brand is different.

It should spend a few minutes and locate all the available channels. Usually I will try it a few times with the antenna pointed a few ways to see the best orientation for max channels.

Also if you are in 29 Palms you may not be able to receive any stations, because of the mountains, not sure. have a look around the RV park and see if there are many antennas up.

Hi guys! That’s exciting new TV and surround! We bought our 5er last year with the plan to  full-time right around the corner. It had a Olevia TV….. We had trouble with it room day one. Warranty people said to have licence TV repair man check it out, long story short, we got a new LG flat screen for our $50. Deductible and $70. Service fee. Super happy!
