I didn’t realize this was going to be such an ordeal, and I totally do NOT have a before pic.  I coulda swore….anyway…

There had been a leak in the past but evidently they had fixed it from the outside.

Got down to the last bit of aluminum framing and the final piece of MDF to get out…and then…there was a surprise…

Mice had entered through the wall up into the frame below the cabinet.  There was NO evidence of them inside the entertainment center…but I kept telling the SIL that something just didn’t smell right.  She kept saying that it was from disuse and when I got my stuff in there it would go away.  Well, every once in a while, I thought I could still smell it.

When I started cleaning this up, BAM!  Right in the face!   SMELLY!!!!!!!!  ewwww is right.

    Thankfully, no corpses…lol!

Gloves, facemask, dustpan and whisk broom.  I didn’t want to use my good vacuum on that!  Tons of cloths and old towels later, it’s pretty clean.

After looking at the wood damage, I think I’d be better off pulling it all out and replacing it.  I don’t wanna be smelling that forevermore….  New wood and painted metal, methinks, is the way to go…any advice?

    Good Luck Norma

We had a pack rat move in to our camper that we lived in full time ( I called him Earl…after the Dixie Chicks song…Earl had to die) he stole stuff… female stuff. I finally put down rat poison didn’t want to, but Earl had to die! when I finally found the nest, OMG, you would not believe all the stuff that was stored there.

One time he came running across the kitchen and I took a broom to try and smack him and I swear he stood up and flipped me off! one other time I tried to shoot him with a pistol…..lets just say that didn’t end well for me…Earl lived. Traps didn’t work. We were stationary at the time living on 40 acres and the cats weren’t doing any good. Earl had to die, hence the poison.

Hope we never have to deal with another Earl again

You fired those dang cats, right? Yes, Earl ALWAYS has to die…or move along to terrorize someone else.  I’m one of those big, bad, scary, people not afraid of nothing..except mice.  And it’s not that I’m scared of them, I just don’t want them touching me!!!  They just move so fast and erratic, they creep me out.

The Lurch’s floor has some soft spots, but I have found no evidence of any type of leak.  I’m now beginning to wonder if there was a raceway under there.  Had plans to pull the carpet and check out the flooring this summer.  Am now afraid of what I’ll find…

However, I’ve never smelled THAT smell anywhere but in the front of the rig..within maybe 6 feet of the driver’s front cab.  Right where I found the nest.

(did you have a funeral for Earl?)

Before you fill Lurch with toxic vapors, try pure vanilla extract undiluted on the nest area. We used to have the same problems in farm equipment, mice would nest in the air conditioning and the urine smell would go right into the metal. Only the pure stuff works. Still have to scrub and clean first, though. Painting over it doesn’t work, looks better but still stinks.

    No funeral for Earl!
We found the nest by following our noses….he had moved in his ole lady, kids and several cousins I do believe. Still have the cats, what can I say?

Kitties are a lot nicer pets than rats, even if they’re not killers!! Some rats that I’ve seen are almost as big as cats so I don’t blame them for avoiding!!

Thanks for the pure vanilla tip Roger!  May come in handy someday when we’re full timing! Thankfully since fall there has been no sign of mice in our Miss Lilly!

Oh, this doesn’t sound good since the MH I plan on getting has been sitting for a couple of years.    I know it is going to have to have a going through I just hope I don’t find anything like this in there.  :o  Good luck in the future with the floor and all.

Just look at the bunk area carefully, they seem to be the first place water gets in.

Our old C had leaks in the bunk, I think it may be because theres a certain amount of flex when you’re driving it. It also had a squeak overhead when driving that used to drive me crazy, I ended up drilling through the bed deck in an grid pattern and injecting expanding foam until it came back out of the holes. Eliminated the squeak totally! The fix held, I sold it to my ex-boss, and he says it’s still quiet.
