On my Cougar I’m noticing the silicone sealant they used to seal the roof gutter strip is starting to open up and peel away from the rubber roof material. I don’t know why they used silicone here as it doesn’t stick very well to rubber roofs, that’s why we use Dicor lap sealant around the vents and seams.
I’m not sure what to do. I sent an email to Keystone and they said not to seal over the silicone, Duh and then referred me to a dealer. You guys built it! can’t you tell me what is the best approach…
So I have an email into the dealer and will see what they say. I think I will have to remove the strips, get rid of all the silicone and find a better sealant, maybe butyl tape? Anyone else been down this road and can give me some advice?
LoveYourRV.comAugust 13, 2014 at 3:50 pm #5627I’m using Eternabond, Ray. I didn’t know about butyl at the time and I knew not to use silicone. Eternabond seemed to be the end-all/be-all. Some talk about how expensive it is, but I didn’t think so. Just be sure to get it really clean and then roll, roll, roll over the top of the tape. Mash with your fingers, press it down good and roll some more. Mine’s holding up great even where there is a little pressure for it to come apart.
I AM using Dicor around every other seam that doesn’t have a strip on it.

August 13, 2014 at 4:10 pm #5628That sounds like a good option. I could take the gutters off, clean up all the silicone calking and then get a wide piece of Eternabond tape and kinda make a corner molding out of it along the length of the roof , then screw the gutter back on over that.
LoveYourRV.comAugust 13, 2014 at 5:20 pm #5629Lap sealant is the only approved material for use on EPDM roofs, Dicor comes in self-leveling and no-sag formulations. $13 a tube, but it really bonds! Don’t forget the disposable gloves, you’ll need them.
Eternabond has a special cleaner to help it adhere better. I have a roll of Eternabond, but haven’t had to use it yet, thankfully.
An artists gum eraser works on some surfaces for removing silicone residue, did I ever mention I hate silicone? Doesn’t even work well on bathtubs.
August 13, 2014 at 6:35 pm #5632That’s exactly what I did at the wall corner, Ray. I used denatured alcohol to clean with and it seemed to work great. Only time will tell, though, right?
And Roger is o-so-right about the disposable gloves with Dicor! Man, that stuff is stick-ee! But that’s good, isn’t it?

August 21, 2014 at 9:07 am #5767Sounds like allot of work, but not a good idea to be lazy and ignore. I wonder what our seams look like. I’ll have to send Dewey up to inspect. He loves it when I say Ray with love your RV says you should…., lol
September 4, 2014 at 9:58 am #5973That’s to funny Marsha, Well my cougar has the water from the AC building in the corners of the roof and it rolls down the back wall till it stops on top of tail lights. Ray has a video where he puts the diverter down for AC drain water, I sent a link to camping world service dept. in Garner, N.C. and they agreed to fix it under warranty. They said they are doing it like Ray’s video. I’ll find out soon today and hopefully pick it up tomorrow.
