We have a 2011 Forest River Solera on a Sprinter chassis. Just since last week we have been having issues with our vehicle battery. Every time we stop and shut off the vehicle we have to get a jump to restart. We took it to Napa Auto Parts to have the battery tested and he said that there was something still on draining the battery, calling it a parasitic drain, and he couldn’t even get a reading on the battery. Has anyone had this issue? We are taking it in to be serviced, but afraid it will take quite awhile to find the issue and the hourly charge is quite a bit. Any advice would be great!

    Thanks!

Something doesn’t sound quite right there.  I assume Napa tested the battery and it is within its life rating and tested ok.  I am also assuming you have driven it so the battery should have been charged up by the alternator.  Then if I understand correctly, if you turn it off right after driving it, it won’t start due to a discharged battery.  Is all that correct?

Napa couldn’t even test the battery because they said something was still running. Thats when they labeled it a parasitic drain. We haven’t tried turning it off and restarting it right away, afraid that it won’t start back up and we would be stranded. We stopped last night and needed a jump this morning to get us on the road.

Ok, I got ya.  I would think the first thing would be to take the battery out and have it tested.

Then if you do have a significant drain you don’t have much of a choice but to pin it down.  Some things, like the radio/clock will have a very small drain but not enough to drain it over just a couple of days.

Don’t you have a switch on the dash that will allow you to use your house batteries to start you rig?   Mine has a symbol of a battery on it.

Roger and Ray seem to have a pretty good grasp of this stuff, hopefully they will pick up on this.

We do not have a switch, that I am aware of. I’ll have my husband double check. We are dropping it off at the dealers today and hopefully it won’t take them long to find the drain! Hourly costs can add up!

    Thanks for your help George!

The easiest way to find the draw is to put a dvom (meter) or test light on the battery and remove the fuses one by one. When you remove the fuse on the circuit causing the draw the meter will go to zero or the test light will go out.
