So my hubby was at work today and he was told by another that proof of income can be required at the border at times or proof of adequate living income when going into the USA for a few months of living. He said they want to know you have means of supporting yourself and arent going to work. I never heard of this. Is this true?
December 4, 2014 at 1:10 pm #7832Yes it is true. They can ask for proof of income but usually they just want to know that you have enough cash on hand for your trip. A recent bank statement is all that is required for proof of income. We have a boarder binder with that type of information. The one issue to be concerned about is proof of closer ties. There are some good postings in the Snow Bird section of this site.
We had no issues when crossing the boarder. We were asked if we had cash and was it less than $10K.

December 4, 2014 at 1:30 pm #7835I’ve heard this before, but I can’t imagine ever being asked for proof of income. Someone with the financial where-with-all to afford an RV setup is probably the last person that needs to be asked about proof of income. We go to Alberta quite often to visit the wife’s family and I’ve never been asked anything more than the standard; firearms, fresh fruit, citizenship and final destination questions, coming or going.

December 4, 2014 at 3:24 pm #7837Being that we are younger than most snowbirds we have been asked a few times how we will support ourselves in the US, we just answer that we have enough money saved up. They have never asked for anything in writing though.
I find every time is a little different, it’s really hard to predict what questions they will ask so I just answer exactly what they ask and don’t offer anymore than asked. It doesn’t pay to get chatty. Also I don’t try to be jokey, I bet they have heard them all before and will just get irritated.

Yes, think we all know what Customs are like-lol
I know the airports have gotten so “serious” that we’d rather avoid that if we can.
December 4, 2014 at 4:32 pm #7840Like Ray said answer just what is asked and offer no other info. We have been ask if we had enough money or a ticket (airfare) to get home. Never tell them you are going to work in exchange for a campsite.
