We’re set up on Vancouver Island for the winter and have been enjoying a variety of Island weather so far. This morning there is a weather warning for high winds and tons of rain for the next few days. As we are staying in an oceanside park we are getting good dose of the wind. I keep hearing fircones hit the trailer roof and sides! We have our awning rolled in as we don’t want to end up wrecking it, but I am curious as there are several other RVs with theirs extended, but with them tied down to the ground. There are 2 that have those enclosures attached to their awnings. I am watching my neighbours billow and bounce. Is it really possible to have them secured that well to withstand gale force winds? I’d love to have ours out all the time as it really helps when bringing home wet dogs after a walk, or to be able to leave chairs out without getting wet. It’s also just nice to have a porch! Anyone with any experience here? Thanks!
Sue
December 8, 2014 at 1:49 pm #7919I have seen people do that before and it survived. I don’t have that good a luck so I always roll them up at night or if I go somewhere. Only time ours is out is if we are there.
December 8, 2014 at 2:13 pm #7920Hey Sue…What do you consider gale force winds? I don’t know about where you’re at, but that means 55-65 mph sustained with gusts to 70+ here. No way would I leave my awning out in that!
For those who like country music, there’s a song by John Anderson, “Blow Blow Seminole Wind.” Seminole is about 50 miles from here…

December 9, 2014 at 8:12 am #7944When we were camping at Covered Bridge one of the people there related a story where the awning had collapsed due to wind and rain and the neighbours had to come get them out of the trailer – door was blocked.
December 9, 2014 at 8:45 am #7945As I sit here this morning in the TT listening to the crazy wind outside I can’t even imagine leaving the awning out! The 2 TT with awnings that are closed in were fine last night on my ‘dog walk’, and even the one without, but it does have a slide right beside it which may be doing something to protect it. OR..it may have blown off in the night. Won’t know till it gets light. The sound of things hitting the roof has me more concerned with the safety of our roof covering though. Has anyone ever had a it pierced by falling (flying) debris?
Thanks for all the awesome awning advice!
December 9, 2014 at 5:14 pm #7946Not personally, but have heard some horror stories. You’re going to have to get on the roof anyway, to clean off the top of the slide.
December 9, 2014 at 7:23 pm #7951Sue,
Hope all is well with the TT roof! We have a lot of wind and rain today, acted like a true Nor’easter!
Tomorrow is forecast to be colder with less wind, thank God!
We do have an acquaintance who owns a travel trailer that had a large branch poke through his roof this past fall! Luckily he had just bought insurance!!
December 9, 2014 at 8:56 pm #7954Roger and Sue…our 2 slides have awnings of their own which do help with the debris when bringing them in. We’ll be here for another 2 months at least and will give them a good check before we roll them back in to move. Bob and Nancy… so far, so good! We had what turned out to be a not 1/2 bad day here. It blew and poured all night and all yesterday, but about 10am it stopped raining and blowing, and the sun actually made an appearance for awhile! I took the opportunity and got out with the dogs for our daily hike along the beach and up the Oyster River Trail. It was breathtaking! Even had a rainbow. The wind was still blowing strong along the shore and the tide was high with huge waves full of debris. The Oyster River had swelled overnight to the point where it had overflowed it’s banks and the RV park at Pacific Playgrounds was flooding. they even had one of their cottages surrounded by river. Tons of trees going down the river and new ones down over the trail. Our son in law posted a video of Elk Falls in action on Saturday. It was incredible, soI had to go see for myself. Zac, our 12 year old, and I hiked down to the falls lookout and got soaked with the spray! You couldn’t even see the rocks and canyon the water was shooting so fast and furious over the falls. I grew up here and have never seen it like that before. I have to admit…I LOVE the this kind of weather!! It is exhilarating!
The rain held off till this evening though and is now back blowing and raining…supposedly till Thursday. Our park here is doing pretty good for protection and flooding. Thank goodness!
December 10, 2014 at 9:13 am #7958Just saw some pictures of Courtney. Wooooo what a lot of water. Just try to stay dry and safe.
December 10, 2014 at 5:08 pm #7961That lovely front blowing across NM is supposed to give us winds next week of 55 mps, with some sustained gusts 80+!! I’m not too worried about the Lurch, but there’s a huge Crusader 5er next to me and I’m kinda nervous about him!

December 10, 2014 at 8:39 pm #7968Did you ever get your jack stands? Lurch could well live up to his name!
December 11, 2014 at 2:37 pm #8016No, didn’t need them after all. If I run the Lurch every month like I’m supposed to, the air bags stay up.

I DO have some stabilizers. Might be letting those down this weekend…lol!
