After one year of full timing, we were asked to write an article about the top 10 things we love having in our RV.

We were carrying around a bunch of stuff we didn’t use, but these 10 items we’ve learned that we love having. And for good reason. Would love to know what you can’t live without!

We’re youngish full timers, at RVWanderlust, and we’re really happy to have already met so many great folks on RVHH!

Some great ideas and love to hear it from someone who is “further down the full term road”!  We are most likely 3 years away from Full Time status and will be in the working class.  Hopefully by that time internet connections/access will have come a long way!

Keep the great full time thoughts coming.

    Thanks!

I can’t imagine the technology upgrades we’ll have in 3 years! You are in for quite an adventure. Feel free to use us as a resource / sounding board as you go along the way. All the very best…

Had to give this one some thought, there are so many little things that improve comfort and ease. Most are very inexpensive.

    1. A good toilet brush, for obvious reasons.
    2. A shelf for extra TP by the toilet.
    3. Non skid throw mats. Nothing is quite as jarring as putting your feet on a cold vinyl floor first thing in the morning. Easy to vacuum or wash.
    4. 2 gallon bucket and rubber gloves for dealing with black and gray dumping.
    5. Plastic dish pans. Besides dishes, they make great totes and storage containers. Very important for saving water when boondocking. They also fit into some of those weird spots found in a lot of RV cabinets.
    6. Thermal coffee carafe.
    7. Flip top garbage can. Take a kitchen catcher bag with you when you go shopping for one, as most of them don’t fit properly.
    8. Oddly, those square pillows that are used for padding the seats on hard wooden chairs. We use them against the wall in the dinette, gives you a nice corner to nest in. If you sleep with a knee pillow, these work very well. Just cut the strings off the corners.
    9. Power bar (large). You want one that accommodates multiple transformers, there are so many devices these days that require charging on a regular basis. Ours lives on the wheel well under the dinette, where there is an inverter outlet and a stock outlet if we have power.
    10. 3M command hooks and adhesive strips. The strips are good for attaching anything that has a smooth surface.

You could buy this entire list for about $100!
In the words that came with a Chinese weather station I got many years ago, “maintain a noble and exalted environment”!

We will have been living in our 5th wheel for a year come this May and have discovered that we don’t need nearly what we think we need.  Doing with just the essentials has not been as much of a challenge as we first thought and I’ve even cleaned out my closet and cupboards twice, removing even more “stuff” that we don’t use.  Your lists pretty much covers what we have found to be essential as well.  The upside of living with just the essentials has provided valuable insight to what we need when we move into our new “little house”, which should be completed this summer.

Oh, and one essential item is a small crockpot, which allows me to throw a few things together before heading out for hiking and such. :-)

    • Your RV manuals…which I don’t have!   :(
    • Water regulator
    • Heated water hose
    • Roger’s famous throw mats!
    • Folding step stool as you mentioned for the reasons you mentioned  :)
    • Rice cooker
    • Electric space heater (in addition to Big Buddy, of course)
    • Heated dog bed warmer
    • Wonder Wash, Spin Dryer and Smart Dryer (Smart Dryer half price at Camping World..get the pins too, they’re awesome!)
    • Surge protector
    • I am going to add something to put by door to keep muck/mud out.  I haven’t figured out the optimal combination for me, as where I’m parked, the RV blocks the sun/wind,  which is great for ME, not so good for drying out the ground with all this rain and snow we’ve been having.  And probably something to get from the car to the rig.  Ick!

I know this is corny, but my DH is top on my list with my two mini doxies next. Everything else can be gotten in the road! – Nancy
